GPS navigation units are incredibly convenient and useful to have in our cars. Not only are they far easier than consulting a printed map or a written set of directions, they’re safer because they allow the driver to keep their eyes on the road. Nonetheless, there are safety precautions involved in using a sat nav device that should be observed.
First, you should never enter addresses or otherwise operate your sat nav unit while you’re driving. Even if you feel that you can adequately control the car while doing so, your reaction time to any sudden events will be much slower. In fact, with your eyes off the road and focusing on the menus of your GPS device, you may not even see such events in time. Some units can be operated with voice commands, and these are safe to use while driving. But if your unit requires hands-on control, you should only try to use it while your car is not in motion.
